Interference Studies for Multi- Metal Binding by Medicago Sativa (al- Falfa)
نویسنده
چکیده
Previous studies have shown that alfalfa shoot biomass has the ability to bind a significant amount of various individual metals from aqueous solutions. Since most heavy metal-contaminated waters contain more than one heavy metal, it was necessary to determine the binding abilities of the alfalfa biomass with multi-metal solutions. Multi-metal binding capacity experiments resulted in the following order of affinity for the multi-metal binding by the alfalfa biomass: 42.1mg/g for lead(II), 11.4 mg/g for chromium(III), 6.5 mg/g for copper(II), 4.4 mg/g for cadmium(II), 4.3 mg/g for zinc(II), and 0.5 mg/g for nickel(II). In order to better understand how this system may behave with hard cations such as magnesium and calcium which are found in contaminated waters, batch laboratory interference studies were performed with various calcium and magnesium concentrations (0.1mM 1M). In general, the alfalfa biomass seems to have a high selectivity to bind copper, lead, and chromium in the presence of high concentrations of calcium and magnesium from a multi-metal-containing solution. The information obtained will be useful for the future development of an innovative technology to remove heavy metal contaminants from polluted groundwaters

Rhizophagus irregularis regulates antioxidant activity and gene expression under cadmium toxicity in Medicago sativa
Cadmium (Cd) is a phytotoxic heavy metal (HM) that can induce generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are considered as bio-ameliorators that help to mitigate HM-derived oxidative stress. The objective of this study was to assess AM fungus Rhizophagus irregularis on changes in enzymatic activity and transcription of antioxidants of Medicago sativa to Cd s...

Free radicals are implicated for many diseases including diabetes mellitus, arthritis, cancer, ageing. etc. In the treatment of these diseases, antioxidant therapy has gained utmost importance. Alcoholic extract of Medicago sativa was studied for its in vitro antioxidant activity using different models viz. DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS radical scavenging, iron chelating activity, lipid peroxid...
متن کاملBioaccumulation and phyto-translocation of Nickel by Medicago sativa in a calcareous soil of Iran
Abstract Nickel is a heavy metal distributed ubiquitously in nature. It accumulates in soil as a result of human activities, including mining and industries development. It may be poisonous to plants, humans, animals and microorganisms. The present study was implemented as a factorial experiment with a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), of three replications in calcareous soils of Karaj...

The present work was planned to evaluate the phytoextraction of metal mine tailings, Sarcheshmeh copper mine, SE of Iran, by the endemic plant species Medicago sativa L. (Alfalfa). In this pot experiment, we investigated the effects of seven amendments on the growth of alfalfa and uptaking metals from the mine tailings and stream sediment of tailing dam surface. The mean metal concentrations in...
